EPD Declaration
In the light of increased decarbonisation efforts, the environmental performance of products is becoming increasingly important. Emission reductions require precise calculations that focus primarily on the carbon footprint. However, it turns out that this approach is insufficient to determine the full environmental impact. In addition to emitting CO2, methane or nitrous oxide, we consume water, affect the soil or lead to massive deforestation of the planet. This is particularly acute in the production processes and this is where the environmental declaration of the product finds its place.
The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) summarizes the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle (LCA), from the acquisition of raw materials, through the stage of production, transportation, assembly, use, to disposal and recycling. This document developed in is based on the requirements of a number of standards. For example, the environmental impact of construction products is developed according to EN 15804+A2 and ISO 14025 standards. The environmental declaration is verified by an independent third party, thus ensuring an objective, reliable and neutral assessment.
From year to year, the EPD is gaining importance in the context of value chains. Companies buying raw materials, semi-finished products or products from their suppliers are increasingly dependent on comprehensive information on the environmental impact of the goods ordered. There are known cases — also in Poland — where, despite the excellent quality of the product, attractive prices, full availability and service at the highest level, contracts were not signed due to the lack of EPD declarations. Such market pressures provide a strong incentive for manufacturers to evaluate their products. For example, EPD declarations increase the number of points in the sustainable construction certification process (e.g. LEED, BREEAM), so products with such documentation are more often used during the construction of objects applying for certification.
The transparency of producers and their comparability increasingly influence investment and purchasing decisions. The most complete product response under these conditions is the EPD product environmental statement.

What do our customers say?
We have worked with VIVERNO on the preparation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). The project involved the preparation of declarations for 9 products: 6 from the Mostostal Siedlce offer and 3 for Mostostal Siedlce Branch in Rudnik. VIVERNO carried out the project from the conceptualization stage, through the selection of the reference period, the collection of data, the calculation of the environmental footprint in the individual stages and the development of the final report.

For which products can an EPD declaration be made?
EPD declarations originated in the construction market, but today they cover virtually all products, even food products. When drafting the declaration, the guidelines contained in the PCR (Product Category Rules) documents for the relevant product category should be followed.
For what period is the declaration valid?
A document verified and published by the programme operator shall remain valid for five years from the date of issue. However, if there are major changes in production processes — which will affect the content and accuracy of the declaration — then the EPD should be updated.
From what period should the data used come from? Does this have to be the last full calendar year?
The EDP should use as up-to-date as possible available data. However, any 12-month period from the last 5 years can be used.
Is it possible to prepare an EPD declaration for a group of products or several plants?
An EPD declaration may cover several similar products, different production facilities or even several manufacturers of a given product (e.g. average declarations to an industry association). Programme operators shall specify their own rules for defining similar products and the criteria they must meet in order to be covered by the averaged EPD declaration. These rules are published in the General Programme Instructions (GPI).
Does the declaration have to cover all phases of the product life cycle?
The decision on the application of the phases related to the construction process and use lies with the manufacturer. However, there are cases where the scope of the analysis is predetermined. For example, according to EN 15804+A2, all construction products and materials should have declared modules A1-A3, C1-C4 and module D. Only products meeting the conditions specified in the standard are exempted from this requirement, including the inability to separate the analyzed products as a result of integration with another product and the absence of biogenic carbon.
Is the EPD declaration prepared by VIVERNO ready for publication?
According to EPD standards, the environmental declaration developed must still undergo a verification process by an independent third party. Verification is carried out by the selected program operator. After a positive passage of the process, the approved document is published on the operator's website.
