Decarbonisation strategy in line with SBTi guidelines

The development of a company's decarbonization strategy is a multi-step process that aims to determine the path to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases associated with the company's operations. Such a study is crucial in the context of increasing regulatory requirements and the expectations of investors and counterparties in the context of the transition to a low-carbon economy.

As part of the development of the strategy, the company should define ambitious but realistic emission reduction targets over different time horizons in accordance with global climate change scenarios and credible methodologies such as the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The correct decarbonization strategy must be incorporated into the overall business model and decision-making processes in the company. The basis for the preparation of the decarbonisation action plan is the calculation of the carbon footprint, the energy efficiency audit and the choice of the base year — the contractual reference point necessary to measure the effectiveness of the reduction measures taken.

At VIVERNO, we develop decarbonization strategies according to the SBTi methodology. We provide our clients with ready-to-implement documents with precisely defined emission reduction levers. Moreover, our offer includes support in the field of obtaining grants for projects related to sustainable development. This type of external financing significantly increases the chances of implementing decarbonisation strategies.

What does the decarbonisation strategy look like?

1

Selection of the base year and calculation of the company's carbon footprint (if it was not previously calculated).

1

Research of competitive companies from the industry and selection of benchmarks from the Polish and foreign markets.

1

Selection of appropriate decarbonisation targets for emission ranges 1, 2 and 3 according to climate scenarios and appropriate methodology.

1

Development of a plan of actions leading to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the company.

1

Analysis of the company's business strategy and integration of the developed decarbonization plan with it.

1

Documenting the developed decarbonization plan in a strategic document to be adopted by the company's board of directors.

1

Presentation of the strategy in front of key people in the company.

What do our customers say?

Do you have any questions? We have the answers!

It is the process of reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases to reduce the company's carbon footprint and counteract climate change.

They should include a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by a specific value, over a specified period of time, of a given range of emissions (1, 2 and 3).

The answer to this question must take into account several factors. The three key arguments are:

  • the reduction of greenhouse gases can lead, among others, to energy savings and increased operational efficiency of the business,
  • having such a strategy is often a requirement of business partners and/or financial institutions, cooperation with which may depend on the counterparty's carbon footprint reduction objectives,
  • Companies that reduce their carbon footprint mitigate their impact on the environment.

The business is taking a number of steps to reduce its carbon footprint, including

  • increasing energy efficiency through the modernization of equipment and buildings,
  • switching to renewable energy sources,
  • optimization of logistics and transport,
  • waste reduction and recycling,
  • working with suppliers with a lower carbon footprint to reduce emissions in the supply chain.

The SBTi requires companies to set emission reduction targets directly within their borders or value chains. Carbon credits cannot be considered as a reduction in emissions in the context of achieving scientific objectives and therefore cannot be considered by companies as a substitute for reduction measures. Emission compensation through carbon offsets and credits can only be applied to residual emissions — greenhouse gas emissions that remain after all possible and practical emission reduction measures have been implemented. These are emissions that have not been completely eliminated with available technologies, processes and practices, even with maximum decarbonization effort.
