Introduction to the Science Based Targets initiative
In an era of growing environmental awareness and progressive climate change, sustainability is becoming one of the key elements of companies' business strategies. As a result, reliable data on the environmental impact and commitment of economic operators have become extremely important. Accurate information on commitments and paths to achieve environmental objectives is an element of building transparency and competitive advantages in the market.
Credibility in terms of decarbonization ambitions, the companies ensure themselves by joining the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). It is an initiative that defines a science-based methodology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As part of its activities, the SBTi promotes best reduction practices and verifies individual climate targets based on the latest climate knowledge, allowing them to be aligned with the Paris Agreement target. The application of the guidelines is to ensure compliance with the path of an increase in the average temperature of the Earth of 1.5°C and the achievement of Net-Zero by 2050.
More and more entities are engaging their value chains and requiring counterparties to set targets verified by SBTi. Joining this initiative is already becoming an integral part of effective business strategies in some industries.

As part of the service, does VIVERNO also develop a strategy to achieve the objectives reported to the SBTi?
We offer both support throughout the process of joining the SBTi initiative, as well as advising and developing a decarbonisation strategy that meets the requirements of the SBTi. However, these are separate actions. Companies that cooperate with us can choose both services or only one of them.
For what time horizon should the decarbonisation target be defined?
Firms can set short-term goals that must be achieved within 5-10 years from the date they are submitted to the SBTi for approval. It is also possible to report long-term and Net-Zero targets for which the target year is 2050 or earlier.
Should the target cover all 3 ranges of the carbon footprint?
Decarbonisation targets reported to the SBTi must include emissions from ranges 1 and 2. Scope 3 of the carbon footprint is mandatory for companies whose range 3 emissions account for more than 40% of their total emissions from ranges 1, 2 and 3.
How long does the company have to send the target from the moment of filing the declaration?
After submitting a commitment to set science-based targets, companies have 24 months to present specific goals in the SBTi.
Can any entity join the SBTi?
Science-based goals can be developed according to the SBTi guidelines by financial institutions and companies from different industries and all sizes. Jendka due to the ongoing process of developing dedicated guidelines for fossil fuel companies, the acceptance of commitments and the validation of targets for this sector have been upheld. The SBTi also does not currently assess targets for cities, local governments, public institutions, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations.
Are the SBTi guidelines common to all companies?
The SBTi offers sector-specific guidance and a streamlined path for SMEs.
For which sectors does the SBTi provide sectoral guidance?
The SBTi has prepared separate methodologies for the following sectors:
- Energetics,
- financial institutions,
- forestry, land and agriculture,
- clothing and footwear,
- aviation,
- cement,
- chemicals,
- the maritime sector,
