The heating sector in Poland is considered to be very problematic in terms of transformation. It is extremely emissive and based mostly on fossil fuels. It is an important part of the economic landscape of our country. Where can you get the funds to make the necessary changes?

Poland has one of the most extensive district heating networks in Europe, which supplies heat to millions of residents. The changes that need to be made in the heating industry require not only a lot of work, but above all — huge financial outlays. In order to support the transformation in the heating industry, the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management has launched a priority program entitled “District cogeneration”.

Call for applications for funding under the programme”District cogeneration” starts now 15 december 2022 The budget is as much as PLN 1 billion (PLN 0.5 billion in grants and PLN 0.5 billion in loans). Entrepreneurs operating in the district heating sector can apply for grants of up to 50% of eligible costs and loans of up to 100% of eligible costs to finance high-efficiency cogeneration. By financing technologies that reduce the carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency in the heating sector, the programme will contribute to the development of the entire sector.

Deadline for recruitment:

  • 15.12.2022 — 20.12.2023 or until the allocation of funds is exhausted.

Conditions for participation in the program:

  • Implementation of the project within the framework of a heating system whose installed thermal capacity (on the date of submission of the application) does not exceed 50 MW.
  • The co-financed installations must introduce into the public heating network at least 70% of the useful heat produced in the cogeneration unit.

Investments eligible for the programme:

  • Construction or reconstruction of generating units with a total thermal and electrical capacity greater than 1 MW.
  • The units must work in high-efficiency cogeneration and be connected to the district heating network.
  • The energy is to be generated from: RES, waste heat or gaseous fuels, gas mixtures, hydrogen, synthetic gases.
  • Gas connections and connections to the electricity and heating networks can be considered as an element of the investment.
  • An energy storage can also be co-financed if it is integrated into the installation.
